The "Jesus Fish" is one of the most widely recognized Christian symbols in the world. Its proper name of Ichthus comes from the Greek word for "fish", hence the symbol being associated with the word. The Greek letters for the word also make an acronym for "Jesus Christ, Son of God." There is speculation that the fish symbol was once used by early Christians during persecution as a secret "password" to determine if another person was indeed a follower of Christ; one person would scratch one of the arches of the fish in the sand, and if another person completed the fish by making the other arch they could be trusted as a Christian. Nowadays it is used as a public profession of faith found on clothing, buildings, and perhaps most commonly: bumper stickers.
